It’s All About the Music
My love of Japanese music began over 20 years ago. Growing up in a rural part of California’s desert, I was drawn to anything that felt different—which, thankfully, was a lot. With satellite television and a dial-up internet connection, the world suddenly felt reachable. One summer afternoon, I caught an interview with a Japanese band I would later discover was Puffy AmiYumi. They shared clips from their recent “Run! Puffy! Run” tour in Japan, and I was instantly captivated by songs like “Kore ga Watashi no Ikiru Michi” and “Asia no Junshin.” I knew I had to hear more. I ran to the computer and placed a bid on eBay for two CDs, shipped straight from Japan.
Soon after, I relocated to Anaheim and met a friend from Japan attending university. Together, we formed Ichiban, a four-piece indie rock band with vocals sung in Japanese—again, something completely new for California!
As the years went on, my love for all things Japanese only grew. I collected Sanrio items, video games, and music, traveled to Tokyo whenever possible, and immersed myself in Ghibli films. Along the way, I realized my true passion: connecting with treasures from the past—whether music, experiences, or nostalgic objects—and finding ways to bring them into the present. Tokyo Beatniks was born from that desire, an expression of rediscovering and sharing those gems.
Over time, collecting has brought incredible experiences. Today, thanks to my collaboration with OK Marketplace, I’m thrilled to share this love with others. At the pop-up, I offer personally sourced items from Japan, introducing people to treasures they’ll continue to cherish. Through Tokyo Beatniks Record Label and DJing Japanese vinyl, I also have the privilege of creating a platform to share music that brings joy to a new generation.
Being a conduit for Japanese music and culture is deeply meaningful to me, and every vinyl, collectible, or curated item represents a chance to connect the past with the present—something I hope everyone can experience through Tokyo Beatniks.
音楽への情熱
私の日本の音楽への愛は、20年以上前に始まりました。カリフォルニアの砂漠地帯で育った私は、何か「違うもの」に惹かれていました——ありがたいことに、そういうものはたくさんありました。衛星テレビとダイヤルアップのインターネット接続があったおかげで、世界がぐっと身近に感じられました。ある夏の午後、Puffy AmiYumi のインタビューを目にしました。彼女たちは日本での**「Run! Puffy! Run」**ツアーの映像を紹介していて、私はたちまち 「これが私の生きる道」 や 「アジアの純真」 といった曲に夢中になりました。「もっと聴きたい！」と思った私は、パソコンに駆け寄り、eBayで日本から直送されるCDを2枚入札しました。
その後、アナハイムに引っ越し、日本からの大学生の友人と出会いました。すぐに私たちはIchiban という4人組のインディーロックバンドを結成しました。ボーカルは日本語で歌うという、カリフォルニアではまさに新しい試みでした。
年月が経つにつれ、私の日本への愛はますます深まりました。サンリオやビデオゲーム、日本の音楽を集め、可能な限り東京へ足を運び、ジブリ映画に浸る日々。そんな中で気づいたのは、私の本当の情熱は過去の宝物とつながること——音楽であれ、経験であれ、懐かしいアイテムであれ——それらを現在に結びつけることだということでした。こうしてTokyo Beatniks は生まれ、過去の素晴らしいものを再発見し、共有する表現の場となったのです。
これまでのコレクション活動は、多くの素晴らしい経験をもたらしてくれました。現在は、OK Marketplace とのコラボレーションを通じて、その愛を他の人々と共有できることを心から楽しんでいます。ポップアップでは、日本から直接仕入れた厳選アイテムを提供し、人々が大切にできる宝物との出会いをお手伝いしています。また、Tokyo Beatniksレコードレーベルや日本のアナログレコードをDJする活動を通じて、新しい世代に音楽の喜びを届けるプラットフォームを持てることも大きな喜びです。
日本の音楽やカルチャーの橋渡し役として活動できることは、私にとって非常に意味深いことです。すべてのレコード、コレクタブル、そしてキュレーションされたアイテムは、過去と現在をつなぐきっかけとなり、皆さんにもその体験を味わってもらいたいと願っています。
